Hello everyone....I know many of you, but found out things I didn't know about you. Others are new to me and it is nice to meet you and I am happy you joined our little internet family here.
My name is Charlene. I was born and grew up in SE Minnesota. I was the youngest of 7 children. My parents had a farm with dairy cows, sheep, beef cattle, chickens (various breeds) and a few other animals. Our Mom always had a huge vegetable garden and also many flowers. The vegetables were a must because it fed our family, but she truly loved her flowers.
In 1973 I had a moonlighting job at a bar/restaurant where I worked with a guy named Larry. We ended up getting married and I had to move 12 miles south, but I was now in Iowa....I went from a Minnesota Norwegian to being an "Iowegian"...lol.
We bought the house that we live in currently in 1980. We raise 2 children here...a girl and a boy. Over the years we have slowly added more and more flower gardens to our yard. I don't do many vegetables any more since the kids left home. Flowers are my passion and I suppose you all know that Hosta's are my husband's passion (Hostalover). Our yard is filled with many flowers from my Mom and Mother-in-law. We also have tons of flowers from friends on this board and they all have special meaning.
We have 6 grandchildren...4 boys and 2 girls....the oldest being 21 and the youngest is 8½. Our children live close so we have been able to spend lots of time with them. Right now I am in the process of retiring from an Upholstery business that I have owned and operated for almost 37 years. I am liking retirement so far.
I have met many people from this board since I joined B&B in 2006 and they are all lovely people. I have especially good friendships with several of them....I think about 4 of my top 10 friends are from right here. It is hard for many to understand how internet friendships can even exist...but I know they do!!
Also Bloominguy is my big brother! We live 2 hours apart so don't see each other real often but keep in touch via here and telephone.
I won't comment on everyone's posts here, but I have to tell you that I have a secret crush on Rick...lol...he has met in person and played with some of my heart throbs from my younger days. (I hope my husband doesn't read this...lol.)
Nice to meet you all and hope to see more of you. Charlene

Hope I'm posting this in the right place!
I'm a Midwest gal and lovin' it. I look forward to the change of seasons and love them all, well, with the exception of those few frozen tundra weeks in the dead of winter and the dog days of summer. Gave up the nice backyard garden several years ago when all of God's creatures, great and small and even the slimy ones coming out of the ground, decided it was growing to be their own personal salad bowl, despite all our tricks. Just couldn't give up the fresh tomatoes though so took to growing them in huge pots with much success...until the chipmunk moved in last year. One of our daughters asked if I had set out the plastic forks. What? I'm supposed to give them eating utensils now? Actually followed her advice and lined the outer edge of all the pots with plastic forks and "so far" the tomatoes have been safe.
I really enjoy cooking, except for the days I don't feel like it. Baking is OK but I'm not as good at it, primarily because it's an exact science and I like to mess around with recipes. I've found that works for cooking but not so much for baking.
I've been a TOH lurker so many of you sound familiar. You all seem to have so much fun so thought I'd take the plunge and join in. Thanks for getting this set up, it seems like a fun and friendly place to be.

almonds welcome!
What a great ides about the plastic forks. I have such a problem with squirrels getting into my pots and digging out my flowers when they are still small. An idea I am going to try for sure next spring.

Good luck with the forks Kathy! I had my doubts but it really works. For flowers, she also introduced me to a product called Liquid Fence and it also does the job. It's also safe for the environment, pets, and other. It can be found at garden centers or hardware stores.

Hi....I am new to you, but I have been reading on the other sites for a very long time...lurking sounds so sinister..but never posted . Every time I would plan to start posting there would be a board or troll problem. With the last change I couldn't access my info to get on, so I just gave up. Also, I'm not very tech savy so I need to ask for your patience with me.
I have laughed with you and also shed a few tears and said many prayers for those who needed them.
Thank you Bette for getting us here.
I am a widow of 11 years and live in Northern Virginia. After my husbands death in 2004 I sold our home on 3 acres and moved to a restricted 55 and over community 3 level villa home. Now most of my plantings are in containers on the deck or patio. When I married my DH, a widower, I became an instant mother of two preteen children, a boy and a girl. Seven years later we added another boy to the family. I have 3 grandchildren and 2 great grands. One son in NJ. one son in Va. and my daughter is in Ark., near where Dave lives.
I grew up in a small town on the St. Croix River in Wisconsin, 12 miles from St. Paul/Mpls. I am one of 7 children, all but one still live in the area, the other in Mich. In many ways I still consider myself a mid-westener. I manage to get back at least once a year for an annual check-up at the Mayo Clinic and time with the family, usually in the Fall.

Welcome from Northwest Ohio! It is nice having you with us. I'm glad you felt comfortable enough to share your story with us. Please join in conversations often! It seems like things are going to run much more smoothly here than they did on the last version of the B&B community forum and at TOH towards the end. Here, should be more conducive to easy posting.

Hello, My name is Janet and I live near Atlanta, Ga...I think I must be the only Southerner on here so far..everyone seems to be from up North or in the mid West...I lived in North Carolina all my life until I married my 3rd husband in 2008...We both are from NC but he has lived in Ga. for over 60 years. I have know him for years and after my second husband died and his wife of 52 yrs passed , we got together ..I lost my first husband when I was 42 and he was 46..He had a massive heart attack...Our two daughters were grown and married at that time....I stayed single for 17 1/2 years before I married second husband...He died with cancer 4 1/2 years after I married him. He was an alcoholic which I did not know or many other did either..He always drank Vodka and at night . So that is what killed him in the long run...I was single for 3 1/2 years before I married the one I am married to now..I like Georgia but I would certainly like to be back in N.C. near my small family..I just lost my oldest brother the 26 st of June this year and that has been hard on me...I have one other brother, no sisters,,,but always wanted one....
I loved working in the yard until the last two years...It is so hot and humid here in Ga. I just can't take the heat and I have bad knees , I went out to pull a few weeds last week and paid for it for several days afterwards, so I have a tendency to shy away from the outside now...I also have seen one too many snakes in yard and I don't do Snakes very well...have a horrific fear of them for some reason...but I still try to have some of the old bystanders ( perennials ) . I love being on the sites here and have had some wonderful help on different things...shared a lot of things with the friends on here....family is not always kin to you....I feel like most of you are family...and I would love to meet all of you but know that is impossible....I did meet a friend from Alabama one Sunday morning and we had breakfast at Golden Corral with our husbands....Hope to see her again soon as we will be going near her home about October.... I started my working career at a wholesale grocery , working in office to start with, took over bookkeeping when the other lady got sick , then went on the road as wholesale rep. for about 5 years after one of the salesmen got sick...loved doing that ...called on mom and pop stores , not the big chain stores like today.... Had my own beauty shop at home for awhile but that didn't work out....then got a job a Wal Mart and gave them 21 years of my life....not as bad as some would want you to believe about WM.. we had good benefits and was treated good....and if you did your job you were rewarded for that too. We were a close knit family of sorts... I retired in 2008 when I moved to Ga. and have loved being retired but miss being around people every day...My DH and I recently joined the YMCA and have been walking and doing pool exercises for arthritis, which so far has moved muscles that haven't been moved lately..so am sore but hoping to work that out soon. We have a small 22 ft Rialta motor home and love to travel when we can..it has not been much the last two years because DH was sick all of 2015, cancer, gall bladder surgery, back surgery, and two bouts of pneumonia...He is lucky to even be here, he is still weak from all of that and can not understand why he can't go like he always did...He will be 80 his next BD....not a spring chicken anymore. me either..I am 75 yrs old..life has changed for us as it does for everyone...we have a garden but it has been so dry this year it has not done anything this year....glad to be on here with the rest of you and hope we have a nice close knit group....God Bless.! Janet

I also want to welcome to the members here and to Janet, I want to say..."HELLO" my friend! Think of you every time I look at my beautiful Yellow Butterfly bush. Glad you made it here.
Almonds...I also may try that fork trick...sounds too easy to be true. Where in the Midwest are you?
Novajoy...my husband has cousins at Hudson, so I know that area. When you are at Mayo Clinic, you are just 45 minutes from my house. Rochester is our closet big town.
Happycooker..hello to another Midwesterner...glad you joined. Where in the midwest do you live? Charlene
