Several months ago I was in S. Carolina and found myself in a local breakfast joint, it was called Uncle Johns. When I was returning to my car after finishing breakfast I noticed a small Palm tree (? - I really don't know anything about tropical plants) in the landscape that had several seeds or nuts below it, they were about the size of a small walnut. Out of curiosity I picked one up and put it in my pocket. When I got back to Ohio I took the seed from my pocket and put it on my dresser, there it stayed for a few weeks. Every time I looked at it I thought about planting it.
Finally I filled an old 8 inch plastic pot with soil and placed the mystery seed in it's new home. I put the pot on my back porch. I looked at it every day until after a few days I noticed the large seed was gone, dug up. The darn chipmunk (he has been a thorn in my side) had taken it and left it on the steps. I replanted it and finally after several weeks it sprouted, yeah! Well a while after it sprouted the chipmunk dug it up again, I found it the next day on the front sidewalk. It looked pitiful and wilted. I planted it again and put some plastic mesh over the pot. I hoped for the best.
Fast forward a couple of months and now my little seed/nut is a small palm (?) about 4 inches tall, and growing slowly. The little plant has had a rough life so far but I am expecting the best for it. I'll have to bring it in for the winter and take it out for the summer. Yes, I think we are going to have a happy life together, and it all started with a good breakfast at Uncle Johns. - Rick -

What a nice story...and that will make a beautiful houseplant with lots of memories and stories to go with it. Maybe you should try the plastic fork advice to keep chipmunks out of pots. Do you know that trick? Charlene

Love your story, Rick! I was going to say exactly what Charlene did. Maybe try to put plastic forks around it to keep the critters from digging it up.

It has been so much fun to read about your "borrowed" seed...I think one lesson would be never give up? Sad to say, some children has the same uncertain upbringing but they can thrive just as your little palm, especially if somebody offers a helping loving hand...

That is quite a story Rick and a persistant little plant. I think it will make it in it's new home in Ohio.

Love the story, Rick. The problem I have with digging in the pots, are the squirrels, they would probably use the forks to dig with!

Love it! I noticed this morning when I got to work, some seeds from my yard were attached to my slacks. I must have brushed against the mother plant. I looked at them and realized that was the method behind the madness to get seeds to establish away from home.
