I seldom come in the front door so did not notice this problem until last night. The leaves are pretty much skeleton-ized. I cannot see any bugs or worms on them.
I did see the same thing on my miniature rose in a pot on the deck and the other morning I picked 38 tiny green worms off of it, then sprayed it with Orthonex Rose spray and have not seen any worms since.
Tonight, Backyard Farmer program on NETV mentioned Rose Sawfly and that sounded like what has hit my roses. It makes spots on the leaves and or eats them down to just skeletons of the original leaf. There are no Japanese beetles here as yet. I have seen lots of unusual little bugs flying around all my pots.
The roses had been blooming so pretty and I had deadheaded them once so far. I hope I do not lose them to whatever is attacking them.

It does sound like it might be sawfly. They are little small shiny flies that lay their eggs on the roses & in my case,my hibiscus. The larva are very small green worms & hard to see on the leaves.
They start out making small oval shaped holes & the worms are about the same size & shape as the holes which is why they are so hard to see. But once you spot them, then you can see them easy the next time you look.
I use NEEM Oil which works great but I saw a couple new larvae today so need to spray again. In past years, before I found out what is was, I lost a big beautiful knock out rose to them. On my roses I don't see much "eating" but the leaves will get discolored & have small brown splotches on them. Ron say they get down in the canes if you don't control them & then there's not much you can do at that point.
They eat the heck out of the hibiscus leaves though; leaving a skeleton look, just like you said.
This is one on a rose leaf
Mine look more like this & the brown area is a dead giveaway. But they are very small.
My leaves can end up looking like this almost overnight.
Does this help?

Gayle, that is how they look. Same thing on my one mini rose but I could see the tiny green worms there and picked them off. I could not see a single on on any of the big roses out front. DH sprayed them with some bug spray he uses around the house. Guess I better get some kind of spray for them before they die. The next onslaught will be the Japanese beetles!

Looks like what I have eating my Joe-pye -weed. I use flour per Snow. She said to sprinkle flour over the plants, sure does work.

Connie, I never saw the worms on my KO either, just those splotchy leaves but they killed it. It was 6 ft tall & beautiful. Gone now.
The NEEM oil is safe for the plants & the environment.. It makes the leaves taste bad & the larvae won't munch on them. It has a lot of other uses too.
I'm not too sure how well inside bug spray will work. I try to use things that are safe for the environment as much as I can.
I never heard of using flour. I might look into that.
The JB arrived this week. NEEM oil doen't work on them though.

Those little green worms sure did a job on my roses. If you go out early morning you are more likely to see those little worms. Place something white under the bush and give it a shake. They will drop off and you and see the little wiggly things. By mid morning I could never find one! There are several products that will take care of them.
