I've heard a rumor that spring is here. The birds, at least, believe it because nesting behavior is beginning. Have you seen a nest built in a funny or inconvenient or crazy place or with funky materials? Take a picture and submit it to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's annual Funky Nest Contest. You could win binoculars or a bird feeder or other prizes plus your entry published on their web site. Do you know a child or grandchild who loves to watch the birds? Encourage them to enter--if you read the stories submitted with the pictures you'll find kids' entries in there, too. They request a story with it and the submissions can be in a number of forms like videos or poems. Take a look at the 2017 submissions for ideas: celebrateurbanbirds.org/community/challenges/funky-nests-2017/results/The home page for the 2018 Funky Nests in Funky Places is: celebrateurbanbirds.org/community/challenges/funky-nests-2018/ Be sure to read the information about how to photograph nests without disturbing the birds. So, keep your camera handy and stay alert. You never know where those creative birds will decide to nest! Birdy
