Stuff!
I've got stuff! I've got piles of stuff that have piles of stuff on them. Stuff that has stuff piled in them. Today's challenge will be for me to clean out piles of papers and stuff I piled onto my kitchen table to organize it. To make room for seedlings, of course. Seedlings from seeds I couldn't find in my heart to throw out.
I had an aunt who didn't keep things she didn't look at or didn't use for six months. She would "pitch" them, she called it. I guess you could say it is "Pitchday". Six months goes by too fast and I have more piles of stuff by then. Stuff that I might read someday. Or too good to throw out, or I may have a use for it one day. Or, or, or, but!
How do you manage your stuff?

Wendy....I've got too much "stuff". My kids really think I've got too much, but when they need something, who do they call? Yes, they call me and I often have just what they are looking for. Both of our kids are good throwers.....a gene they didn't get from me.
I can't say that I do manage my stuff as well as I'd like. I have tried organizing it by getting files for paper stuff and trying to put mid size stuff in closets. Large stuff that I cannot bear to throw just yet is often taken to the attic or the basement. Then eventually I have to clean those areas and decide what I need to keep and what I can live without goes to the garbage man or to my brother's 2nd hand store if I think it's something someone else could use. I was thinking about this yesterday but didn't come up with any cure. Last fall when moving I was forced to get rid of a lot of my stuff. A lot more of my stuff got pack away for me to unpack later. Over the last 5 months I have been very busy collecting and replacing stuff. I did decide I want to have some stuff but need to find a line on how much is enough stuff. Looking around I am thinking I have just passed that point and need to start unloading.

My stuff is increasing at such a rate that I'm convinced that it is mating and breeding. I'm sure that I am finding hybrids of stuff that was created by stuff I already have. That must be the reason--I certainly can't be bringing all that stuff home, can I? It must be migrating!

My kids all think that I am a hoarder. I keep what is in the house to a minimum. I clean out closets and drawers at least every 6 months and throw anything that I haven't used in that 6 months.
The reason they think I am a hoarder is because of all my pots and other gardening supplies and also tools which I have in the basement and the garage. I admit I am a hoarder when it comes to those things, lol.

I'm so glad I have good company. I just finished a pile sitting on top of a cart in my kitchen. Found stuff dating back two years. Tossed a lot of cards. Thank you to those who sent them, but they had to go!
Lair, I have boxes from when I moved here 18 years ago that are not unpacked. Then add to that stuff, the stuff I took from Mom&Dad's house when we sold it.

Wendy, I have stacks on stacks but have moved many of them to file folders but with no rhyme or reason. There is stuff that is not related in the same folder. Unfortunately this is what I do when I get sick of looking at the piles.
However, one thing I have been doing is organizing my emails. My email program allows me to set up files to move emails that I really need to keep into a new file. Also I am getting rid of as much paper etc. by scanning what I really need and filing it on a flash drive on the computer. Being secretary of the Lions Club you don't want to see the number of documents that I get in the mail and in email that really need to be kept.
An example I have been on the computer sending and received emails in regards to the Lions upcoming garage sale from 7 this morning until about noon time. They are all filed in on folder in the email program and I can run a save and add them to a flash drive. One might say I am looking to electronics to get my life organized.

I just had my daughter here for 5 days and we spent 2 days going through some of the stuff in 'HER' room. This is stuff from childhood to college. It's basically books, papers, lots of old clothes and shoes, old toys, her rock and seashell collection, and misc. small junk. Originally it was her intent to totally clean the room and take home with her what she wanted but she just got the 'BOMB' dropped on her that her renter/roommate bought a house and is moving out the end of May. She never even said she was looking let alone buying.
Valerie did take some stuff home with her. I can see her point now of wanting to wait until her renter is gone before she brings more of her boxes of 'stuff' down to her home. She does feels she can financially handle the payments and expenses of this townhouse by herself now. The other gal goes nowhere and does very little so with her new employment upgrade a year ago she apparently was able to save for her own home. She took a job as a secretary in the same building our son works; he sees her at work every day. DD works for the same company also but a different side of town.
I have 'STUFF' also and some of my stuff is going to DD. There are many every day items that will be leaving with Kara so Valerie will need new stuff. I have already packed up a 6 place setting of Corelleware that I don't need anymore along with 2-8 piece sets matching glasses; one set of tall glasses and one set of short glasses. I can't wait to see what else I can give her from my kitchen cupboards. I had a 6 piece set of glasses I was going to give her. Yeah, I broke the very first glass I was going to take out of the cupboard. Well, I guess they stay here. Funny, I've had these glasses since 1977 and never broke one until now. Buying Christmas gifts may be fun this fall!
I also have a lot of my DS's clothes that he just left here in totes when he got out of college. We have a nephew that just got out of prison (poor kid did stupid stuff due to a crappy upbringing-ADHD/Turrets) and is now finally at the halfway house. I asked his grandma if he can have theses things. If he needs clothes I have L-XL sizes. He's as tall as my son was. I would love to GIVE this stuff to someone who really NEEDS it.
A year ago I started a rug made from cutting up old t-shirt to make my yarn. I barely got started and ran out of t-shirts. In the last two months I've found enough t-shirts that I can start crocheting again, but first I have to cut up the shirts to make more yarn. I may rip out what I have done and go for a bigger rug. I also know a gal who might be able to use some of my old blue jeans.
I have a question: Does anyone make quilts by cutting squares out of old fabric from shirts, dresses, etc.?
I've seen quilts and purses made from old blue jeans. Valerie just got a beautiful pair of blue print mittens for Christmas from her BF's mom. She bought them at a Craft Fair. The guy buys old sweaters and cuts them up to create new mittens. I also watched a program where a guy goes to thrift stores looking for wool sweaters to unravel and reuse the yarn to knit hats and gloves. I spied one sweater that DD put in the cupboard that I might try to make myself a pair of mittens. It was a Scandinavian print sweater in shades of green.

I am old so I have lots of stuff. Much of which I should get rid of but it is stuff I like...we just don't use it anymore. I told DH the other day that our house was dirty...he said it is not dirty, just cluttered and that is the truth. If anyone wanted it, I would give it away to them but our kids do not want it. They are a throw away generation...Me, I keep it because I might NEED IT!.
I did do some tidying up this morning and if I did not have the hair appt. I might keep going or if I did not have the appt. I might not have started to begin with. I get the paper work put in a place to file but never get the filing done.
It is a vicious circle!

The husband called it a pilot program. Pile it here, there and every where - then remember which pile it was in!
On children not liking things, the next generation, the grands might really enjoy something from GG in later years. DS packed a few things away for them. DGD is doing vintage and loved so much stuff that was my mothers. Even DD liked a glass and pitcher set she remembered drinking orange juice as a child. It was a wedding gift and after the Dish washer came stuff like that got put away!
My DD is very good about asking, pitching and sharing. But I only see her 3 times a year up here and she can't understand why I am such a mess.
I had a new medicine and for 2 days I could see where to put stuff and write letters,3, and no d&g or H&Y flipped. Told dr it was good for dyslexia. But the next week it was all gone, I could realize I could do things others couldn't and when it came to sorting and putting away, I NEED HELP!

Mary....if that kid is slim, I'd be happy to give him some clothes. I have many boxes of men's small and medium clothes. I have found homes for all of the 28 waist jeans, but still have a few boys size 16 long. I also have probably 200 t-shirts if you'd like more for your rug. Just let me know. I don't think people make quilts out of old fabric. Too much time, work and money goes into a quilt to use used fabric. JMO Charlene

Plenty of stuff here with 6 people. This morning there were 28 shoes on the rug. Granted there are drawers for shoes also in entry way, but too much work to open a drawer. Softball stuff, gym stuff, tennis stuff, volleyball stuff, my work stuff. Yep, we got stuff!

Charlene and Mary, I did make 6 quilts out of my mothers old clothes after she passed away. We were cleaning out her basement and the nephew had moved her things to the basement. They smelled so bad of damp, dank old basement so I washed and washed them but it was still in there. I made 6 crib sized quilts more for lap quilts than anything else. I had a snapshot of her scanned onto material and that was included in each of the quilts. I don't think the woman owned a thing that was not cracked, stained or torn including her clothes. Middle DD was with me one time when I went into Hobby Lobby and bought some additional fabric and she said mom that is ugly. I said, "Oh it will be alright". I had to pitch a quilt into the hall closet many times when one of the kids would show up. Come Christmas, each of my 4 kids and 2 nephews got a quilt to unwrap with a little poem I had written. There were 6 kids including the boys who shed happy tears that Christmas. I would share the letter but cannot find it on the new computer.
We also made a floor quilt for youngest DD's first baby. Used a mans flannel shirt from the grandpas and the uncles. Cut large squares from them and made a quilt so when they went visiting, she could put the baby down on the quilt. Even included some pockets on some of the pieces, handy to put things in.

We have a gal here in town that makes the mittens from old sweaters and sells them at craft fairs around the area all summer. She gets a good price for them.
