I prefer self checkout, it's easier for me to catch any pricing errors as I can watch each item as it scans. I also prefer bagging my own groceries so I can do it the way I prefer. I can separate the cold items from the others which makes it easier to put away when I return home.

Self checkout for me. Like you, I like to sort things - items for the bathroom in one bag, laundry items in another, etc. Soooo much easier (and quicker), to put stuff away!

I also prefer bagging my own groceries so I can do it the way I prefer. Me too. IMO, I can do it faster and better, although taking my own bags can be more complicated at the self check-out.

I do my main food shopping at the Shop-Rite which doesn't have self check out. They have baggers at each register and they do a good job. And even if my Shop-Rite did have self check out I would probably hardly use it.
However, when I stop in this one particular store called Stop and Shop I use self check out because there are no baggers at the registers. And when there is a bagger or two, nobody cares about your groceries.

While I quite like the self-serve checkouts, I do like to be served :) . Enjoy chatting with the cashiers, especially if we are away from home. I also feels it keeps people employed. Used to feel the same way about bank machines altho I rarely go into the bank anymore.

I have never used the self check out. Not even sure how they work. Do they take cash as I do pay with cash quite often?
Nancy, I love Shop Rite. What great prices. Only problem is I have to travel about 45 miles to the only store in this area. I have a running list all the time of what I have to stock up on when I go there which is about 4 times a year. Their produce is fabulous. They don't have baggers at the store I shop. You either buy their bags or bring your own. The do a great job of stacking everything in the cart however. Very careful with every thing. Their cashiers could sure give lessons to other stores on how to handle groceries. I have canvas bags so I pack according to where things go when I get them home. I have to carry a cooler with me when I go to put the perishable things in.

I do both, if I am short on time or only have a few items I use the self checkouts.

I prefer to use the cashier. I do my part by gathering up the groceries and paying for them, so I think I'm entitled to the service. I shop at Meijer where they do a good job of packing the groceries most of the time. At the local grocery, which is more expensive, there are also carry-out boys, so that's always a plus if you need them. I just feel that if I am willing to shop at their store, I deserve the courtesy of this service. If every retail outfit turns to self checkout, there are going to be a lot of people out of jobs. I am a big believer in customer service!

I prefer cashier. They are much faster and the cashier lanes usually have bagger helpers!

Cashier, I try to save as many jobs as possible, as my DH lost his job that went to Mexico. Most of the time I happy with the way they are bagged. I use the recycle bags. If I don't like how pack I redo it in the car, but only twice I have had to do that.

Cashier...old school, I guess but I never use the self check out. My husband was a cashier in his high school days and the checkers get a kick out of his bagging our groceries but they think he does still do a great job.

I always have cashier. I figure I pay enough for the groceries I want the service, what there is anyway, to benefit me. So they bag my groceries and put them in my cart. No carry out service at the stores in this area anymore. Used to be at one time and that was nice.
I shop Save A Lot sometimes as they have good prices and often specials on everything and are carrying a lot more brand name items now, too, especially on special sales. You bag your own and wheel them out to car. Works okay for me. I take my own canvas bags and also have a couple of empty boxes in back of my car to set things in. I also shop TOPS Market and they bag the groceries and put in cart. I never do self checkout, but DH sometimes does for a few items. I do the bulk of the big shopping and I have pulled this that and the other thing getting things in and out of car before. So I am more careful, and I tell the cashier to pack the groceries light. Some don't always do it, though. My last trip the gal put 3 jars of applesauce and 2 jars of glass beets in same bag.....was a tad heavy getting it from cart to into car. She was either preoccupied with herself or doesn't care and can't think. Maybe I won't get her again when I shop there!
I always wait too long to go grocery shopping. I should go more often and have less load, but that is not my favorite thing anyway, but no choice out of necessity! I need to do a better job of going more often as it would be easier.
When I go to TSC for bird seed, etc., they always carry it out to my car or at least offer to. They are helpful that way.
My DS is a produce inspector at a wholesale place now. Before that he was Produce Mgr. in grocery store so lots of experience and a hard worker. He has been in grocery store business since high school graduation. He started with night crew worker, then was the mgr. of night crew and then got a chance to learn the Produce part of grocery. So has been in it 35 years.
