I have lots of monkey grass. Both sides of long driveway & long sidewalk. For some reason this season there are lots of weeds in the grass. Always cut M.G. back sometime in February & it does great. This year way too many weeds in short grass. My question: would Weed-B Gone hurt M.Grass?? I think Round-Up might kill the grass & weeds. Just want weeds gone. Other things I need to do besides pulling weeds out of Monkey Grass. All info appreciated. Thanks. Happy Gardening, nanatnzone6

Stanette...I am not familiar with either Mokey grass nor Weed b gone, but I did a google search and found that some have "painted" the weeds with round up...a foam brush dipped in a can of round up. Here is another answer I read which probably sounds much easier:
I use a product called "Image" from Ambrands. Lowes sells it. It specifically states on the label directions that it can be used on liriope and mondograss. Works pretty good; just don't overdo it.
If possible, I prefer pulling weeds to poisoning them, but sometimes poison is the only option.

Thanks so much. Will have to do some thinking about this. I have way too much grass to pull weeds. Probably take a week & my old knees & back can't do that anymore. Appreciate you searching for me. Take care, Happy Gardening, nanatnzone6

I use Weed B Gone but only in my yard. I don't think I'd trust it in any flower beds , not even the Monkey Grass ones. Regular weed killer like Round Up will kill EVERYTHING. Charlene, Monkey Grass is the same as Liriope. It gets little purple flowers on it. Usually used as a border plant or around the base of trees. It's also called Lily Turf in some places. And Alma is right, it's used a lot in the South.

And Alma is right, it's used a lot in the South. Still not familiar with it Gayle. I did google it and see pictures and this is what I found about hardiness...not even close to zone 4 Liriope grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 6 through 10. Although it can withstand some parts of USDA zone 5, it is not able to live through colder winters in northern parts of this zone. However, the right climate zone for your liriope plant depends on the species and cultivar that you want to grow. USDA zones 8, 9 and 10 are the right climate for growing Liriope spicata "Silver Dragon," as well as Liriope muscari cultivars such as the "Aztec," "Christmas Tree," "Evergreen Giant," "Webster Wideleaf" and the "Royal Purple." I'm having the same problem with my Monkey Grass, but I don't have nearly as much as it sounds like you have, Stanette. I've had to resort to doing the hard job of pulling the weeds out of the grass.....hard work.

I got some monkey grass from a lady who decided to move from her farm here. If you wanted to buy it that grass is expensive. Here it is known as Lily Turf. I gave the monkey grass I had to my son in MO. It will grow there well because he lives in the right zone for that kind of grass. Here it would be an annual.
Sharon, Preen makes a weed preventer for ground covers and such. You could try that in your monkey grass.

DD knew when to prune - after the last frost. The neighbor went by here timing and even the locaal radio station said if KATIE WAS PRUNING IT WAS SAFE! I was there at the time. LOL In Huntsville Al.

I don't use Round Up on anything. Recently on TV there was talk of it being bad for anyone to use and can cause illness when used on property and is harmful to humans. And, it does kill anything it gets sprayed on. I use the homemade weed killer with vinegar, dishsoap, and salt. I have used Weed Be Gone before, but now I use the homemade stuff.

If yours is the green, I can send you some if you accidentally kill it! JK. I am pulling and pulling out the green liriope. It has been taking over. I love the variegated one, and have some of it in the back yard where it is shaded, but it won't grow there for me. I want to move it to the front when I have time. It clumps instead of sending out shoots and multiplying. I wish I had dug up all of the variegated from my mom's before we sold the house. Instead, I have been fighting the green one that somehow came along with some daylilies that I got from there.
I'm like some others in staying away from chemicals as much as possible. I pull weeds in the flower beds, but leave the ones in the lawn alone, except for mowing before they set seed.
Hope you find a solution.

Julie, PREEN doesn't kill weeds. It just keeps them from re-seeding (along with anything else that re-seeds in the area, incl flowers). You have to get the weeds out first.
