4 cups of sugar 5 cups apple sauce 3 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon cloves 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1/2 teaspoon allspice.
Put in crock pot and mix to well blended.
Cook on high for 6-7 hours or longer if you want it darker. Stir in every 2 hours.
You can adjust the spices if you want more flavor or less. I like more.

With all due respect, are you sure these amounts are correct?? Makes no sense to have 4 cups of sugar to 5 cups of apple sauce? That is just way over the top and too sweet, not to mention horrible for diabetics. My and many other crockpot apple butters call for 6 cups of peeled and sliced apples to 1 or 2 cups of sugar along with the spices. I'd have to suggest looking around for other recipes because anything with that amount of sugar should be illegal!

Kendy= I have been making this for years. It is fine. Just don't make it or eat it. I will recheck the recipe though!

Anyone that wants to use less sugar by all means use less.

Here's a recipe that works really well and you start with apples, not apple sauce!
5 pounds Granny Smith apples, cored and cut into 1-inch pieces
1 ½ cups white sugar
½ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
½ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
½ cup water
Directions Place apple pieces into a large slow cooker. Add white sugar, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and vinegar. Add water and mix well.
Cover and cook on High until apples are starting to soften and release liquid, 1 to 2 hours. Reduce heat to Low and cook, uncovered, until all the apple flesh is dissolved, 5 to 6 hours. Stir occasionally.
Puree using an immersion blender until smooth. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until darkened and thick, about 4 hours more. Pass apple butter through a strainer if desired. Seal in a glass container and refrigerate until cool.

I made my own applesauce first and went directly to the crockpot for the apple butter. I use a food mill too. Thank you for your version Kendy.
