Good afternoon,
We started out with sunshine in the 50s but a bit of a chilly breeze. I got another section of the front yard re-seeded before youngest DB showed up to cut the stump roots off for me.
That is now done & looks much better; at least I think so. He tossed most of the cut off roots into the hole under the stump & I added some pieces of a busted up bird bath & the wood from the well I knocked part. Will be adding some leaves when I get them raked. After that I don't think there will be much of a hole left to fill & I can start replanting And now, since I don't have to wait on any heavy equipment driving across my back yard, I can start filing in the dips that turn into ponds when it rains. There goes my lakefront property.
After he left I changed clothes & ran to Lowe's for a couple bags of topsoil. I also got a box of assorted Tiger Lilies & one of assorted Columbine. The lilies will go in the bed around the tree stump where I've always had lilies but don't know how many will survive the damage from the tree. Besides you can never have too many lilies. Haven't decided where to put the columbine yet.
I'm going to check out the creeping sedum for the slope. I've tried the thyme before but didn't have any luck with it.
Yes, Charlene a variety of plants would be fine. I didn't give up on the creeping phlox as much as it gave up on me. It was there a long time & just gradually died out. Mary's plants in that tree stump are pretty too. Will give that some thought. If my Missouri Primrose that I just planted there in the Fall doesn't survive I may get some more. I really like those.
Update:Lithodora does not do well in hot climates. It needs some protection from hot afternoon sun.
That slope is probably one of the hottest places in the yard on summer afternoons. So that sounds like a no.
Ajuga says does best in partial shade. Same problem there.
Dragon's Blood Sedum sounds good. I have yellow sundrops, pink ice plant & pink Primrose, if they survive,so that should work.
Back to the crazy weather. When I came out of Lowe's the sky was a beautiful blue filled with all these fluffy white clouds. By the time I got home , 15 min, later, the sky had turned gray & I was sure it was going to rain again, Now the sun is back.
Karen, you can use the Handicapped placard in any vehicle here in Va. too.
Looking forward to dance night tonight & working in the yard this coming week. I'll be home & the weather looks decent, if a little cool, for the next several days.
