Love garage sales and thrift stores but seldom buy anything any longer. As most here have said I should be getting rid of things, not bringing more into the house. I like looking for books, so reasonable, and love looking through cookbooks. There are a lot of wonderful old and community cookbooks at these types of sales and they have the best recipes in them. They're especially interesting when they originate in out of the area states or even countries.

We do like to go to garage sales/yard sales. I like to pick up books for winter reading. Can't beat it when you can find books for .25 or .50 each. I don't go for much else except maybe odd things that can be used for planters. I got an old wooden magazine rack a couple of years ago that is perfect for a planter. We did hit the St Rt 127 garage sale this year. For anyone who hasn't heard of it, it runs from Michigan to Alabama the first weekend in August. People come from all over the US and Canada for it. It's fun to see all the different license plates and talk to people from all over. We had a fun conversation with a couple from Missippi this year. They said they usually start in the south and come north every year, but decided to come to Michigan and head south this year. I start in Ala and go as far Cincinnati Ohio.

My DH and I would take the kids on the weekend to garage sales as a form of entertaining...lol. I think every item we bought I eventually threw out. Not that they were not used, just figure out in the end it was junk. I have not been at a garage sale in 40 years. I want to get rid of, not buy.

I mentioned this to my friend from Ontario and she had heard about this sale. She did admit that she would love to do this! Thanks for mentioning it.

I love going to flea markets and thrift stores etc. We have found so many great deals on name brand expensive items. And yes we also have bought stuff we really didn't need to add to the stuff we already had at home ! But it is just fun to find " a deal". We don't spend that much, just have fun searching and then checking it all out when we get home. Sort of like a child on Christmas morning with excitement when they see all the presents around the Christmas Tree. Oh speaking of tree....I found a tree at the flea market in a plastic storage container and it is a 6ft. tree for $5 . How could I pass that deal up? The container it was stored in was worth way more than $5. I put the tree up at Christmas and it is fine ! I also love antique pretty small dishes and have quite a few Hmmmm wonder how I got my board name :) I love finding something I remember my Grandma had in her kitchen or home and it brings back so many fun memories.

Angela, we actually did see several vehicles with Ontario plates. We just do the local area here, never more than 3 or 4 counties away. But some people are really serious about it and have uhaul trailers, campers, etc. If she is interested, there is a website for it too. I think it is 127sale.com. Kind of fun to look at.

I don't usually go to them, as I don't need more stuff. I did once get a beautiful cake plate at a garage sale and it didn't cost that much and now it's a vintage item. It's one that was a Hostess Gift. As I remember you couldn't buy them you had to host a party and or have friends host a party to get them.

I suspect the quality of the garage/yard sales depends a lot on the wealth of the area. My friend in Ontario lives in the Muskoka Lakes area where there are many well to do people and she finds a lot of name brand items. For example she has picked up a Gucci hand bag! In my neck of the woods, most everyone here are mostly hard working pay check to pay check folks & their sales reflect this, in my opinion. Anything vintage is super well used & has seen better days.

Angela, you may be correct on the quality depends on the wealth of the area. However, it may also depend on the people having the sale in general. My cake plate is glass and it didn't look like anyone had ever used it. The company that provided it is still in business today and I said vintage because I don't think it's available anymore. I have had it for over 15 years now. I did go to several party shows over 25 years ago and did buy some of their water glasses, & vases so when I saw the cake plate at the garage/yard sale I realized what a great deal I was getting.

Not really into yard/garage sales, but now and then I do enjoy stopping in thrift stores. Shopping this way was once several years ago looked down upon by many, but it seems to be quite popular these days. Some days you can not even get into the parking lots near the thrift stores in my town!
Like so many of you said, it's time to be getting rid of items, not bringing more into the house, however... Once a month, DH and I like walking through the stores and enjoy the childhood memories when we see something our grandparents or parents had. That's not to say we don't buy things, but they must be things we will use. DH has gotten some wonderful deals on fishing poles, tools he uses at work, and flower pots. I tend to go for the books and kitchen items. I am always giving away baked goods and I have found very reasonable priced containers to store the goodies in and beautiful plates to give away with the treats piled high on them. As a retired teacher, it was a great place to find storage containers for my classroom, and extra toys/games for my students to play with. I am still substitute teaching, and can tell you that almost all teachers I know shop this way to get the extra goodies they need in their classrooms for their students.
When our DD was in the drama club in high school, the instructor always told the students to shop the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and other local thrift stores for costume pieces. I know of several friends that come up with great Halloween costumes by shopping these stores. As my dear mother use to say, "what is trash to one person is a treasure to another person."

Like most of you, I need to rid myself of 53+ years of accumulation but I like garage sales, Goodwill (alias the Willows), thrift stores etc. It is like a treasure hunt. Most times, I buy for the kids and grands. DH reads a book a day so I also look for those for him as he will not go to a G sale. This year I have gotten quite a few things for me. Picked up a large cheese grater with 3 heads that I can also use to shred carrots and the larger cut to shred potatoes for hash browns (save my knuckles from the upright grater)! I think the fun thing is, you never know what you might find. I have a small Lennox cannister that I got for 50 cents that lists on Ebay for $60 plus. Someday I will list it there. Such treasures.
Actually, I am going to sort thru the closets and rid myself of some more stuff. Cleared out 4 boxes of clothes and took them to the thrift store...(garage sales are too much work to get ready for). I boxed up 6 boxes of books that I will put on Ebay this winter. Cleaning the house up little by little.

Love them all but haven't been to yard sale for a couple of years. I got in the habit of donating or throwing something out before I bring more in. LOL
