No-Melt Suet-Birdy thegardenersshed.proboards.com/thread/1026/feathered-friends-recipe-melt-suetI have been using this recipe for about 20 years so I don't remember the source--it was recommended by an experienced birder. It’s included in the recipe posting below—my birds really love it. Birdy 1 cup crunchy peanut butter 1 cup lard or melted suet 2 cups ‘quick-cook’ oats 2 cups cornmeal 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/3 cup granulated sugar Melt lard and peanut butter. Stir in other ingredients. If it seems a bit too runny, add more flour. If you are using this during the summer, you don't want it running out of the holder. Fill small plastic (margarine) containers about 1/2 full, then freeze. Other shapes of containers can be used, of course, according to your feeding method. If you use the commercial suet, save those containers for filling with this mixture. When frozen, remove from container, wrap and keep frozen until used. I have filled holes in a 3" diameter log with bark with this mix and hung it by a screw eye. Woodpeckers loved that. You can add seeds to this—I added just a little black oil sunflower--but be careful not to overdo it or the cake won't hold together.
