Cut Flowers preserving-bwatcher
If the end of the flower stem has been out of water and exposed to the air it will seal up from the air and prevent the rose from taking up water. While holding the stem under running water, you need to cut off about 1.5" to 2" of stem with a sharp knife. The water prevents air from getting into the stem and preventing water from being drawn up. Once cut, if there is a drop of water on the end, it won't let air in the stem. This is true of any cut flower.
Roses won't take up COLD water. Once the water comes back to room temperature they may take up water, which may be too late to revive a flower. Warm water may not help if the stem hasn't been cut off and the flower has taken in air. Once you cut the stem off, place it in warm (NOT HOT) water.
I also read that if the rose was extremely wilted you should submerge the whole flower, head to stem, in warm water and let it stay there for awhile until it revives.
