Good question Stella. We usually only buy them when we have a certain recipe planned, but have had the occasion of them getting slimy and bad in the fridge. I like the paper bag idea for storing them in the fridge. I love fried mushrooms on a burger! YUM!

I am so glad the question was posted because I have a pkg. of mushrooms that now need the plastic wrap removed. mnwildflowers, I never thought of putting mushrooms on a burger-going to do that tonight. Have I been hiding under a mushroom shaped rock, or what?

I buy on sale mushrooms .They are a bit darker in color but have more flavor (just my opinion). I wash them and store in a basket lined with paper towel in the fridge for a day or two . Then cook them in a bit of butter and store in snack bags in my freezer .i always have Mushrooms on hand for soups & stews or that morning scrabbled egg. And I agree if they turn slimy throw them in the compost . Sandy K

Love mushrooms! I usually buy them and wash them, yes I wash and not just wipe with a damp cloth. I'll set them on a paper towel and cover with another and pat dry. When completely dry, I slice and layer between paper towels to keep them dry. If they don't have a home after a few days I bag them in a zip lock bag and freeze. If thoroughly dried they don't stick together and any amount can be removed and used in any cooked recipe. They won't work if you want them to be 'fresh' though as on a veggie tray.
Oh yes, cooked mushrooms on a burger are great, cooked mushrooms on a burger with Swiss cheese is even better!
