Thanks for the 2 recipes...both sound good. i used to love shopping at the open air markets when we lived in Germany..picked up a number of their spices but would be interesting to know the name of the spices you use if you would like to share, Tamara? Lori, your Hungarian burgers sound like something we would like...no Paprika? I kid Marta, my Hungarian friend that they can’t cook anything without Paprika.

Thanks, Tammy. I've learned a lot about Maggi trying to find the German version online. Apparently, there a number of different formulations of the recipe depending on where it is sold. www.thespruceeats.com/maggi-special-seasoning-from-switzerland-1446943Anyway, the Maggi sold here in the US isn't the same as the German. The German is called Maggi Wurze (with an umlout over the u--sorry about the spelling) instead of Maggi Seasoning. Apparently, Germans swear by it. So . . . I guess I will have to wait on making German Hamburgers until I run into this version. My family is German on my mother's side but so many years removed from Germany that I doubt they would have even used it. I found a recipe for frikadellen which looks similar to yours. www.thespruceeats.com/basic-frikadellen-1447071Isn't the internet wonderful?! I learn something new every day. Birdy

I think the Maggi that I bought was the authentic German version since the instructions on the package were all in German! I had to look up a couple words to be sure I was making it correctly. I have not made them in quite awhile. Luckily you just put the mix in a bowl, add water, stir, then add the meat and blend well. The name of the mix was Hackbraten. it's delicious!

OK--now I get it. I looked up Maggi seasoning and found the liquid in the bottle. There is a German variation for that.
Your mentioning Hackbraten changed everything! I checked out Maggi Hackbraten Mix and found a packet of dry seasoning for meatloaf, hamburgers, and meatballs. Is that what you use?
Checking out scratch Hackbraten recipes, I notice that there's often a little nutmeg in them. We don't use nutmeg often in savory recipes but it does add that certain something. My sister used to make killer kartoffelkloesse (potato dumplings) that had a little touch of nutmeg in them. I loved them so much as a kid that I used to ask her to make them for my birthday. Lots of work to make them properly from scratch.
