August already! It's a foggy, wet morning outside my window and the forecast is for rain and thunderstorms all day, pretty much through the end of this week. Don't know what we'll do for dinner tonight. Usually we go out after choir practice, but this is the last night of VBS at our church so no choir practice, and also DH was up a good bit last night with an upset stomach. So we'll wait and see how he's feeling later. Some exciting news this week -- for us, anyway-- our nephew who is playing minor league baseball got moved up to Triple-A! So he's now in Scranton, PA. Waving to everybody ~

Good morning friends.
Elza, Such exciting news for your nephew!
Rain in the forecast for today and most of the week so the pool isn't looking promising.
Last night I ended up making ribs, baked potatoes, grilled zucchini and garlic knots. I might make bbq chicken legs for tonight.
Stopped at the library on Monday and took out a book titled The Bookshop of Yesterdays by Amy Meyerson. So far so good. I also ordered The Blue Bloods Cookbook by Bridget Moynihan while I was there. If I see any recipes I like I will make copies instead of purchasing more cookbooks.
Enjoy your day.

Good morning all.
A dull gray day here and altho rain is possible, it is unlikely!
I've just made up a big batch of cabbage rolls for the freezer - do it every year when the cabbages are ready in the garden. Just waiting for the sauce to cook down a bit and then I can finish them off. I had some meat filling leftover so made that into meatballs and will adapt some of the leftover sauce to go with meatballs and pasta.
I doubt I will want to eat cabbage rolls tonight - have seen enough of them for one day! May meatballs :-/ .
Hope your hubby feels better quickly Elza.
Just ordered the Bookshop of Yesterdays from the library Nancy. Sounds like one I would enjoy but it's going to be a long wait - 121 ahead of me and 5 copies.
Have a great day.

Hello and good morning friends. With the new month starting today, we celebrate with IPA Day and National Raspberry Pie Day. I also have a brother celebrating his birthday today so I will be calling him later today when he comes in from work.
Stayed up later then usual last night as I just couldn't put down the library book I was reading.
Earlier I made a grape tomato salad to go with the fish and corn I'm planning for dinner. Afterwards I left to go to the store to buy the black slacks I mentioned yesterday, but half way there, lights came on and bells were ringing in the car. Said I had low tire pressure and quickly it began to drive strange. Pulled over on the roadside, checked my tires which seemed ok, but decided not to take a chance and get stranded. Luckily I was able to drive the 10 miles back home into the driveway with no additional problems. Planning to use DH's truck this evening and go get the slacks while he can look at my car--hopefully just low pressure and not a new tire.
Oiled the first teak wood cabinet. Since it is not recommended to place items back on the wood for 24 hours after oiling and buffing the wood several hours later, I don't want three cabinets worth of stuff lying around--will do one daily. I'm laughing how soft my hands are right now--better then any lotion I've ever used.
Elza, thank you for starting us off today and sharing the exciting news about your nephew--congrats! Hope today will find your DH feeling much better.
Nancy and any other readers, I'm inviting you, if you'd like to, to stop by The Gardener's Chat and post on What Are You Reading. There are only a handful of us that post weekly, but I'd love to see more posters and their suggestions. Thank you Tasty and Elza for recently stopping in to post there. As for your latest book, I've read the review and it sounds like something I'd enjoy, so I'll see if my library has a copy. I am also doing what you are on the cookbooks--just copying recipes if I see something that we'd enjoy rather then buying more cookbooks.
Tasty, I love cabbage rolls. I grew up eating Hungarian stuff cabbage which might be a bit different then you make--filling is pork and rice, no tomato juice used in the sauce, and it is cooked on the stove top. Please tell me how you make yours. Many years back we went to a deli down in Miami. DH decided to try the cabbage rolls--he left hungry and disappointed as they weren't anything close to what I make.
Time to buff the wood so I'll exit for now. Waving to all.

Nancy, I'm on the hold list for your book, #220. With only 10 copies, looks like it'll be a while before I can enjoy this one.

Having spent much of the morning with my hands in washing up water, maybe I need to do some polishing Lori, LOL.
I really don't follow a recipe when I make cabbage rolls and I'm sure every year they are different. I like a mix of ground beef and ground pork in them, do not usually have rice in them, but will often serve them over rice. I always use a tomato based sauce, well seasoned, with whatever appeals on the day I make them - today I used sage and some Italian herbs (because I knew I was going to have to much meat for the cabbage leaves I had already prepared). They will be very different to your authentic recipe. Would you be willing to share?
I am more than done in the kitchen for today. 7 meals of cabbage rolls, 2 of meatballs, 4 of potato cakes (basically a bubble and squeak mix to use the rest of the cabbage) and a big panful of stewed rhubarb for breakfasts - enough to do us for about a week. Now I just have to stash everything except the rhubarb in the freezer once it has cooled down.

Good morning.
It's so hot and humid here today. We have had so much hot weather this summer which normally we don't get until September.
Yesterday I made raspberry bars for the shower and have them in the freezer. I may make my mom's brownies today or some cookies.
I bought an Insta Pot finally and it is here. I think I will put a bone in turkey breast in it for dinner. It says it takes 30 minutes. All I can think of is my grandmother's pressure cooker and it makes my so nervous to use this thing. LOL
Elza, that is exciting news. I think you mentioned he is in the Yankees system. I'll try my best to over look that. :) Life long Boston sports fan. Honestly, I think it is wonderful he is advancing.
Nancy, I try not to buy cookbooks anymore but I did buy Joanna Gaines' Magnolia cookbook in the last few months. I try to be good, though.
Lori, lol on the oil and your hands. I guess you've found another use for the oil.
Yesterday my mom told my sister in law is coming to her house tomorrow. My sister in law passed away in Feb. you may recall. She also said they are going to her house to look at colleges for my niece (she is 38 ). She is so mixed up. My niece is taking her daughter to FL to look at colleges. Sigh.
Waving to all. Betsy

Well what I typed last night must have not sent?? That is how I do things anymore!! I have a BIG mess in folks house. So bad!! I ordered a dumpster and they are delivering it today. Chuck and Jason and boys are going to help me clean it out. I hope whoever they rent from will check out how they live. They don't clean and tear everything apart. Ripped wallpaper, wrote on walls in bathroom taped nice cupboards with heavy tape and ruined some in living room, put in new air conditioner and is too small and all boards along it don't fit. The list is endless!! She caulked every door way scared of snakes coming in house??? Had things hanging on every door way tied in rags we took one apart looked like charcoal and something mixed with it?? I did not think Terry would do this to me, that is what I get for being nice to him!!
I am doing wash and did my bedding also. It is about all done. I made a peach cobbler as some peaches ripened and did not have time for pie. I bought a box of peaches so put rest in fridge so they will ripen slowly. I have too much on schedule to do this week along with fellowship and now this house. I also cleaned out some drawers in kitchen and also my utensil holder on my counter. I love that thing it is from Pampered Chef and turns and hold all my "stuff" I cook with. But you all know when you cook your hands have things on them so nice to stop and clean things off quite frequently.
Well I guess I better get at it while I can the washer is done with my towels and ready for dryer and dryer has my capri's in and ready to come out. So don't care for them to get all wrinkled!!
Have a great day everyone.
Marlene

Hi again.
Betsy, I forgot to mention that your menu for the shower sounds good. Is your DDIL mother making anything? I saw Joanna Gaines cookbook at Barnes and Noble recently. Oldest DD wanted me to get it but like you said, I try to be good. Sorry to read about your moms confusion .
Tasty & Lori, Wow that's a long wait for that book! I must've lucked out when I stopped at the library on Monday. Usually all the new and popular books are never on the shelf.
Lori, I didn't know there was a What' Are You Reading" thread. I will check it out.
My niece is coming up tonight to spend the next 2 days with us. Her and oldest DD are going to see Beyoncé in concert tomorrow. Not my thing but they like her.
Marlene, That is awful how Terry left the apartment! Maybe you can go through a realtor to find decent renters.
I went through the freezer again and I did locate 3 chicken enchiladas so we'll have that with tacos for dinner.

Afternoon, friends! Darker and darker it gets...! We're in for a whopper of a storm in a few hours. It's muggy, too. DH has gone out to lunch with a friend so we are having a big salad tonight. Went to the Lebanese bakery for some whole wheat pita to go with. On the front counter, there was a new product...a savory turnover stuffed with feta, mozzarella, onion, and fresh parsley...purchased two to try. I had one for lunch, and I was sorely tempted to eat the second one!!! Betsy - Sending hugs to you. Dealing with a mom long distance must be beyond difficult. I am so lucky to be just downstairs from her...though at times it's too close!!! LOL Marlene - Some folks are so ungrateful for what they get. Terry ought to be ashamed. Tasty - I'm lazy...I make unstuffed cabbage roll casserole! I use ground turkey and bulk hot sausage. The sauce is made of crushed tomatoes, brown sugar, vinegar, and caraway seed. I love serving it with fried cheese pierogi. Lori - I looked up Hungarian cabbage rolls. They are way different from the Polish ones my friend's mom used to make. Sound so delicious! Do you cook yours atop sauerkraut? Thanks for the invite Lori to the book group. I posted something already. I love the recommendations! DH just got home; want to help him with recycling...tomorrow's trash day. Enjoy the rest of the day. Waving.

Hi all! Weird day here for me. I actually woke up early and got up, thought about baking some chocolate cinnamon bread but messed around and that did not happen. I was getting myself ready and planned on heading to town. We are going to open a checking account at a local bank. We both use the Johnson Space Center Federal Credit Union but there are no ATM's here or branches. I then got a phone call from the Care center that they needed a driver. So I finished getting ready and drove a man into town-he needed to go by Lowe's. He went inside and I waited out in the car. I noticed a smell, then saw that the car was overheated. I called DH and he came with another vehicle. We left the blue mini van there to cool down. We all came back home. I noticed they were serving meatloaf so we ate lunch at the center.
After lunch I headed to the bank. We wanted a joint account. DH thought I could bring the signature card home for him to sign, but he will have to actually go to the bank for us to open the account. I stopped by the drugstore, then the grocery store for a few things. As I was walking down the back aisle a man asked if I had seen a yellow bird flying around! I looked at him strangely and said no, and walked on, he said "I'm not kidding-a man lost his pet bird in here". As I got to the check out they were all talking about the bird. I guess this guy takes his bird everywhere he goes. We finally spotted the guy and he had his bird back on his shoulder. I paid for my groceries and as I was putting them in the back seat, the guy who had asked me about the bird came out the store saying "ma'am" . I was a little worried-he looked a little bit scruffy, I was afraid he was going to ask for money. He told me that the cashier had accidentally charged his 24 pack of beer to my account. We were busy talking about the bird and looking at her, that I was paying a lot of attention. So I went back inside and got back my $20.00 and some odd cents. Just a weird day all around !
Elza, congrats for your nephews promotion! I saw that on facebook.
Lori, sure hope it is an easy fix for your car. DH managed to get back in to town and take the van over to the mechanic. He said there was a hole in the radiator hose. Glad it was not something that I had caused.
Betsy, I love the Instant Pot. Turkey sounds good. I will have to look for one next time I am at the store. The lady that borrowed my Joanna Gaines cookbook should be back home b now. They were planning on being gone all of June and July. As soon as I see her back home I am rushing over to get my books.
Marlene, I am so sorry about the state of the rental property. There is no excuse for all that destruction. Shame on them! Glad you have some help dealing with it.
I have not been reading much at all lately. Too much time on the computer and tablet! But I have fun! I feel like that is the retirement perk that I earned!

Nancy, no my DDIL mom has not offered to make anything. At least not to me. I offered when she had her shower. :)She lives in Palm Springs and she doesn't speak much English. We are managing though. My ddil is fluent in both languages and Poppy will be as well they hope.
Tammy, I can't believe you don't have your cookbook back yet. I would be sick if I had left and forgot I borrowed something. I would be buying you any cookbook you wanted for doing that. :)
So far so good with the Instapot. I made the turkey breast and decided to make club salads with it. Also did boiled eggs. My dd that just graduated was been laughing at me. Before I even took it out of the box and used it I said it was going back. I was so nervous. She finally took over after she heard me listening to upteen You Tube videos. I was convinced the turkey would be on the ceiling. She has had a fun afternoon.
It's time to go get dd at school. She is still enjoying high school half through week 2.
Have a nice night.

Betsy, LOL we are Braves fans and have never been fond of the Yankees either. In fact, we've always said that we pull for the Braves and whoever's playing the Yankees. But we are big fans of our nephew so I have to cheer him on, no matter what team he's playing for!
