when it comes to eating out?
I think Italian. Pasta, which forms the basis of many Italian dishes, or pizza dough, are both extremely cheap to buy , so I think the mark up must be incredible. Easily 10 times. Many Italian restaurants don't even use handmade pasta, either, which would be more worth paying for!

I think all eating out is over priced but after working in a restaurant for 3 years I have a bit of a thought on that. It isn't the cost of the actual food in a dish but unfortunately the overhead that goes with running a business. I anything is over priced is the restaurants that us all prepared frozen foods. They could make in house and cook to order with good prep work for the same or less money and have a much better product.
I find today one of the worst places for cost is fast food. Mc Donalds for one. I take the grandkids once in a while and I could take them to a good sit down meal for almost the same price.

The price of a Starbuck's latte is pretty horrible these days!

I agree about pasta dishes being overpriced. Pasta itself is cheap or cheap to make fresh. Basic ingredients in many Italian dishes aren't expensive either. The expenses comes when adding meat, fish, or seafood but even that, when compared to the pasta and sauce amount shouldn't come to much. Appetizer prices are almost as expensive as a meal and way too large to be considered an appetizer, more like a meal.
Bet is spot on when she said overhead, especially for large well known or chain restaurants. Some mom and pop places serve food as good and décor as nice but for less money. Cleanliness, good service, taste, and being spoiled a bit is my idea of fine dining.

Drinks, ie coffee, tea and soft drinks............$2 or $3 for plain coffee.....for 3 or 4 people it can add up to a chunk of change. If you add alcohol to it, the tab can out pace the food tab very quickly.

The Japanese food in Mall food courts. You get a big pile of rice (dirt cheap), some mixed veggies (also cheap), and a very small portion of meat for around 10 dollars. Yes I still buy it, but it is way overpriced for what you get.
