Good morning from a very wet Eastern Ontario.
It has been raining here off and on since about 6 am and it's lovely. I'm so glad to see this. No storms altho it is quite windy, just rain that, now the ground has had some moisture over the last week, should hopefully sink in and help the water tables around here.
It is still warm so quite happy with fairly light food still – salads and fruits, omelets and maybe quiche. Not into soups and stews – they can wait for the cold weather.
I didn't do very well sticking to my plan last week – mainly because we didn't like the ham very much. It was just too sweet for us. I am using it for sandwiches and I think some of it will go in a pea and ham soup that can be made and frozen for the fall. We also have a friend whose husband is in hospital who came to eat one evening and that was a spur of the moment thing. And then we went out for supper on Friday. And so it went . . .
Green beans, tomatoes and raspberries from the garden and a cauliflower I bought will all be on our plate in one form or another this week. I came across a recipe for cauliflower cakes a while ago and tried them – worth making again. Cooked cauliflower and potato mashed together with some cheese, egg and seasonings, then either fried in a pan with just a little oil or baked in the oven. I have a pork roast and the caul. cakes would be good with cold roast pork. Maybe just a regular roast pork with trimmings one night if it's not too hot? A couple of burgers on a dry day with a salad. Maybe nachos for a quick and easy meal. Nothing definite yet.
How about you? How do you plan your meals? Do you plan your meals or come 5 o/c grab the nearest thing and go with it?
Edited to add: At last I came up with something for tonight - a chicken marsala cooked in the crockpot, with mashed potatoes and green beans :)
Have a great week,

Hi, all! I got some black beans from the senior center and decided to make a TOH recipe for Cuban Black Beans. I changed the recipe and cooked it in the slow cooker. The aroma is amazing. We'll have it with some rice and, maybe, kielbasa. I will also make a TOH recipe for "Fresh Peach and Mango Salsa" to go with it.
We have leftover pork tenderloin with blueberry sauce and risotto cakes to have again. I also have more of the hatch chili potato salad that I think I'll serve with some Barber brand chicken and a TOH recipe for "Broccoli Side Dish".
I got a Slender Kitchen.com recipe for "Korean Beef and Cabbage" that I will make.
I have some shrimp in the freezer if I need any more for the week...perhaps "Light and Lemony Scampi".
Tonight we are having Philly Cheesesteaks, my way with steak strips, Provolone cheese and sautéed leeks and mushrooms on a artisan roll. I have a native tomato to slice and eat. Will sprinkle with Penzey's Fox Point.
Enjoy your week, folks.

Oh, Bet, thank you, thank you so much. This will make a lot of people very happy, me included.
And thank you for moving the weekly budget thread too.
For those who don't know, this used to appear in the Budget Living thread on TOH. It is where we try to do as much as we can, without necessarily spending a fortune and where we try to make sure we don't waste food.
Please feel free to jump in with tips, advice and chit chat!

Love the name. I was searching for a coffee cake recipe this morning. I found one that sounds good but I didn't have butter so I didn't make it. Substituting margarine usually doesn't work well for me.

I did an inventory of food on hand and made a plan for 3 weeks out. I'm sure I will not stick to it, but it will have all my possibilities in front of me so I am not left staring into the cupboard, pantry, or freezer feeling like there's nothing to eat in the house. LOL! Also, I just saw your recipe for Alice Spring's Chicken. I'm so going to make that! It is a favorite of mine. Thanks for the post.

Wow! This is a fantastic new feature here. Did I miss something or did it just magically appear? Thanks to the little elves that made this happen.
Last week's menu plan went out the door by the third day. This week I plan to/hope to concentrate on all the great fresh fruits and other produce. I'm thinking just light sandwiches or eggs of some type and then simple, plain fruits and veggies as they are very filling and their natural fresh taste, raw or cooked very simply, is so good. I'm definitely saving the recipe for the cauliflower cakes for when the fall cauliflower arrives.
Question about posting a recipe...does it have to be original? What if it's been a family favorite for a long time and the only known source is "Mom"? What if it's a recipe from elsewhere that was modified to fit our taste? Are there other restrictions? I guess that's more than one question.
A dessert item that will be on the menu this week is Sour Cream Peach Kuchen. I make it once a year and though it could be made with frozen peaches I prefer the Colorado Mountain Lion peaches for it. Those peaches show up here for a very brief period and I managed to find some today.

I like to come here and see what everyone is cooking. I'm not much of a cook and it seems like I cook the same things over and over, I can get some new ideas here.
Thank you,

Tasty, if we run into a problem we will face it then. If you will note any of the links that were posted to go to a website I included those credits.
We posted recipes of all types on B&B for years and never had a problem.
Ann you had a taste of home link I think for Mussels with cocktail sauce I believe and when I followed the link if you didn't subscribe to any of their magazines you couldn't access it.

A tip for making salad dressing that has vinegar and oil in it. Add all the herbs, spices etc. to the vinegar and let the steep for a bit and hydrate before adding the oil. If the oil is added immediately the it will coat them and you won't get as much flavor from them.

Well, hello! Today my supper is boneless spare ribs and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes (Idahoans), applesauce, or Stouffer's Jonathan apples with cinnamon/sugar fixed in microwave (they are good & quick, too, with any pork or ham meal). Seems I fix the same old thing all the time.
Just baked a chocolate cake and will ice it shortly as it is almost cool. It is a small cake, but good. Haven't baked in ages because just been toooooo hot.

Well, guess I'm going to jump right in, if nothing else to get the hang of it. Trying to read through the bio/ introduction area to get to know a few of you and say hi to others. Really nice to find you guys first of all! Not doing too much cooking today. Made a tuna salad for lunch, leftover stir fry & rice for dinner. Did make some breakfast bars for tomorrows morning meal, along with a smoothie. We try and eat really healthy so not sure if any of you would be interested in this gluten & dairy free bar, they are a little bit crumbly, easy to make and delicious to eat. Found at~ elanaspantry.com/breakfast-bars/Hope you are all having a nice day!
