Ham Delights #2
I first had these back in the 70's when a fellow teacher severed these delicious mini-ham sandwiches at one of our in-service meeting days. They were a huge hit with everyone, and I am so happy she shared the recipe with us. I've made them on several occasions since then. DH claims he doesn't remember having them, so last week I made them again. He loved them that night for dinner and enjoyed them even more the next day when he warmed the leftovers in the microwave for a quick lunch. I did make some minor changes to the original recipe, which I will note below. The recipe does make a lot of sandwiches, so I do have another package wrapped, and in the freezer for us to enjoy another time. Lori
Ingredients
1-1/2 lb. of deli ham, shaved
3/4 lb. Swiss cheese, grated
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 sticks butter, melted
3 Tbsp. prepared mustard
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1-1/2 Tbsp. poppy seeds
3 packages of small, slider rolls
Directions:
1--Chop shaved ham into smaller pieces by running a knife through it. Place in a BIG bowl.
2--Add onion, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, cheese, and poppy seeds to ham.
3--Pour melted butter over the mixture and mix well.
4--Slice tray of rolls in half.
5--Spread mixture on bottom half of rolls and replace the top layer of rolls.
6--Wrap in foil and bake at 375* for 15-25 minutes, making sure the center filling is hot.
Or
7--Slip covered rolls into their original plastic bag, twist closed and freeze. Defrost, and bake later.
Notes:
1--The warm butter tends to melt the cheese...I suggest not adding it to the mixture above before pouring the butter on the mixture. I added the grated cheese after the mixture cooler and was happier with the results.
2--Pile the mixture on the rolls heavy if you want a nice meaty sandwich rather than just a roll.
3--We got a large package of Hawaiian Sweet Rolls at the warehouse store. In the larger package (total of 32 rolls), were two 16-count packages. I made up all 32 rolls, but only baked one, froze the other.
4--Filling was not hot in 15 minutes--took another 15. Time probably depends on how thick you pile mixture on rolls.
