I do love them but have mixed success. I’ve seen Charlenes and if mine grew like hers I’d always have them.
Pronunciation by the dictionary, zin-ee-uh, which is how I say it. Never heard zeen yuh until I met someone from a different state at work who grows them. At first I didn't know what she was talking about!😂

Thank you for the pronunciation of the word. I've been saying it right. My sil on the hand thinks she knows everything so I had to prove it to myself. :) I feel good nanana!

I have always been a big zinnia fan.
You sent some to me as a mystery seed. They were bi-colored. I was disappointed I didn't save seeds.

We all say Zeen yuh in the south I think.
If I heard zin-ee-uh. I'd be like you & saying what is that? But if you say it fast enough it sounds the same LOL

Not different states necessarily, Gayle. My oldest sister says zeen yuh. Charlene

If you let them go to seed, will they come back?

If you let them go to seed, will they come back? They don't here, Linda, but I am not sure if they would in your zone or not. I have never heard of them self sowing. Charlene

And I call them Zeen yahs. Always have.
I am glad to hear it isn't just me, Gayle. I was thinking DM had led me astray. LOL!

My mom always said Zeen Yahs. I am not sure what I say but something close to the right way. Whatever way you say it, they are so pretty and reliable. Mine died out up by the mulberry tree but it is so big now and sucks up all the water as well as shades the area and they do like sun. I planted them in the garden that the garden club had at the Truman Visitor Center, old village area, in Warsaw, MO. When we lived there, I took on that maintenance chore of that garden. It was fun to see people come and take photos because they do attract the butterflies. I planted them mainly because the deer would leave them alone and they ate darned near everything else. WE got some big pots of impatiens from Walmart for free, because it was end of season and they were going to zero them out and add to the compost pile. WE planted them in shady areas around the old house there, before the fall celebration that was held every year. They lasted about 3 days before they were deer food. I have heard zinnias called "Cut and Come Agains" by the older generation of women. Burpee's advertises a Zinnia, Cut & Come Again Mixed Colors. My mom always had old names for things but even she never called them Cut and Come Agains. One of the names I can think of was 'Live Forever which was her name for Sedum. I have a hard time remembering Sedum!

Connie, I have a friend who calls Sedum Live Forever. I never heard it called that before I heard her say it.

This thread has had me sorting through my saved seed (again) and glancing through websites for new zinnia seeds. I got sidetracked yesterday as I was sifting through some seed heads I had saved. Not sure what I will get out of the seeds because they were labeled white and pink. I think they were Zahara 'Starlight Rose' if I remember how they looked, but if they are hybrids I could end up with white or pink. Either way, I am going to enjoy what I get from them. I can feel a zinnia shopping spree coming on soon! LOL!
